Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart goes next-gen now, for free, on PS5

The upcoming game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart aims to ensure players get the most out of their next-gen console. Utilizing the PlayStation 5's super-fast solid-state drive (SSD), Insomniac has nearly eliminated the new title's loading times. In a time where players may be on the fence about upgrading to a new console or just may not see any reason to, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is proving the capabilities and merit of next-gen gaming.

The visual update improves the frame rate to 60fps for the best looking experience yet and is available right now.

The PS5 update was intended to arrive in April, but developer Insomniac tweeted the surprise news giving fans just one day to grab the game with the update for free.

“Surprise! The update is now live. Get blasting, Rangers!” the tweet said.

The  game will return to its normal price after 31 March, so act fast!

The new update will allow PS5 owners to run the game at 60 frames per second. If you own a PS4 copy digitally or physically, you will receive the update free of charge. Additionally, the update will be available for users who play Ratchet & Clank via the PlayStation Plus Collection.

The question of free games on the PlayStation console certainly did not end here: a few days ago the Japanese publisher announced that the Play at Home initiative will be enriched with 10 games both during the month of March and next April of this year, also including the famous Horizon: Zero Dawn - Complete Edition, Aloy's first adventure developed by Guerrilla Games.

The game will feature a new female Lombax character, though we’re still yet to find out her name – despite teases from Insomniac.

Some fans have speculated the new character is actually trans, owing to the fact she has a tail when in the game’s lore only a male Lombax can grow a tail.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart makes a statement by eliminating loading times and zeroing in on immersive experiences, showing that next-gen titles are about more than just a fresh coat of paint. Insomniac is using all of the tools available to create a game that keeps players engaged and immersed, taking full advantage of everything the PS5's hardware has to offer. Considering the gaming industry's obsession with prioritizing increasingly hyperrealistic graphics over meaningful gameplay improvements, this is a welcome break from the norm.

The patch comes at an interesting time for the Ratchet & Clank franchise as the game’s highly anticipated sequel, Rift Apart, is slated to release as a PS5 exclusive on June 11th. More importantly, the 2016 remake is currently free to own as part of Sony’s “Play at Home” initiative with the offer available until March 31st at 8PM PT / 11PM ET. No PS Plus subscription is required to redeem.
